In its early days, Gainesville used to serve as a changing point for stagecoach horses on the Fauquier and Alexandria Turnpike. The area had two other names – Middle Grounds (due to its location between Broad Run and Bull Run) and New Stable (from the stable that was erected). Thomas Brawner Gaines became a major landowner in the area, purchasing land as early as 1835. He sold the right-of-way through his land to the Manassas Gap Railroad in in 1850. The Gainesville train depot was named after him, and a small community with a post office developed by 1856. Today, Gainesville is a dynamic suburb full of both residential and commercial opportunities in Prince William County.

The county seat of Loudoun County, Leesburg was established in 1758. A small settlement emerged at the intersection of Carolina Road (now US-15) and Potomac Ridge Road (now Virginia State Route 7) and in 1757, this area was selected for where the Loudoun County courthouse would be. One of the oldest and most historic structures in Aldie is the grist mill. It was completed in 1809. The mill is a large 4 story brick structure with tandem metal waterwheels. Aldie Mill developed into the largest factory of its type in Loudoun County. The mill provided superfine flour for commercial export and operated until 1971. It is one of the best preserved mills in the Commonwealth and was acquired by NOVA Parks in 2006 from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. Aldie hosts two major festivals a year. The Treasures On the Turnpike festival occurs in May and highlights vintage and antique vendors. There are antiques, vintage collectibles, crafts and jewelry, a flea market and rummage sale. There are historic lectures and tours operating at the Mill. Live bands also often play at this festival. The other large festival is the Aldie Harvest Festival in October. The festival features arts and crafts, food, antiques, children’s activities, tours of historic Aldie Mill, live music and more.

Gilbert’s Corner Regional Park offers 156 acres of hiking trails and beautiful views of the Bull Run Mountains. The Old Caroline Road, which runs through the park, used to be an active north/south route used in the 18th and 19th century. The area was significant during the Civil War and saw a lot of action between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Aldie took place around the area on June 17, 1863.

In 1962, an area called Sterling Park was a collection of large farms. Fred Franklin Tavenner, a distant relative of Benjamin Franklin’s, was an important operator and landowner in the area. In 1959, the development of the Dulles International Airport and the affiliated water and sewer lines to it began to change the area. Land prices rose and there was competition in buying. The town of Burke in Virginia is located in the southern part of Fairfax County. When the Orange and Alexandria Railroad was built in the late 1840s, the station was called Burke’s Station, named after the landowner Silas Burke who donated right-of-way to the railroad. From this new development, the community grew – adding a post office branch in 1852. In 1903, the name of the post office was changed from “Burke’s Station” to “Burke” after Silas Burke’s house was sold to Henry C. Copperthite. He used the 241 acres to build a horse racetrack and installed the first phones in Burke. The area was mainly rural into the mid-20th century. In 1960, the first subdivision Kings Park was constructed. Many followed afterwards, transforming Burke into an established town.

Burke Station Square is a community of around 500 detached and townhouse homes. Close by schools are Kings Park Elementary School (Grades K-3) and Kings Glen Elementary School (Grades 4-5) in Springfield, and Lake Braddock Secondary School (Grades 7-12). Residents have access to the pool and community room (available to rent for events and conferences). There is also a junior swim team which residents can sign their children up for.

Incorporated in 1969, the Lake Braddock community is made up of almost 1300 homes – single-family and townhouses. The amenities include 2 pools, 6 tot lots, a basketball court, tennis courts, the community center, a beautiful lake, a pond, nature trails and more!
