Thirty three miles from Washington DC, Leesburg has gone through significant development in the past 30 years – from a small, rural town to a suburb for commuters to DC. They were impressed by the strong educational system, high median salary, and the rate of sole proprietors per capita which makes it part of the top 1 percent nationwide. The City of Fairfax holds many annual events for residents and those who live in nearby communities to enjoy. Many residents commute by car and will find that many major roads pass through the city. State Route 123, SR 236, and SR 237 pass through Fairfax. SR 236 is called Main Street and becomes Little River Turnpike outside of the city limits. In the northeast corner of the city, US Route 50 intersects with US Route 29. Interstate 66 is the main highway that serves the area and provides access to the other major cities in the DC Metropolitan area.

Located in Fairfax County and approximately 20 miles west of Washington DC, the town of Centreville saw much population growth in the 1990s and 2000s. There are many shopping centers that were built around the town center. The three major road that run through the area are US Route 29, VA Route 28 and SR 620 (Braddock Road). Interstate 66 is the route towards Washington DC.

Fairfax County Public Schools serves Centreville. Liberty Middle School and Ormond Stone Middle School are the two middle schools in the area, with some students going to Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly. Centreville High School is in Clifton but serves much of Centreville. Chantilly High School and Westfield High School also serve the area but are in Chantilly.

What recreational activities does Centreville offer for residents in the area? Discover Cox Farms, a family-owned farm that hosts seasonal events. Bull Run’s Atlantis Water Park opens Memorial Day weekend and offers swimming and splashing entertainment for the whole family to cool down during the humid Mid-Atlantic summers. The Bull Run Festival of Lights is hosted every year after Thanksgiving, with a 2.5 mile trail of beautifully decorated holiday-themed light displays.

In its early days, Gainesville used to serve as a changing point for stagecoach horses on the Fauquier and Alexandria Turnpike. The area had two other names – Middle Grounds (due to its location between Broad Run and Bull Run) and New Stable (from the stable that was erected). Thomas Brawner Gaines became a major landowner in the area, purchasing land as early as 1835. He sold the right-of-way through his land to the Manassas Gap Railroad in in 1850. The Gainesville train depot was named after him, and a small community with a post office developed by 1856. The county seat of Loudoun County, Leesburg was established in 1758. A small settlement emerged at the intersection of Carolina Road (now US-15) and Potomac Ridge Road (now Virginia State Route 7) and in 1757, this area was selected for where the Loudoun County courthouse would be. The town was not incorporated until 1813. Today, Leesburg is a robust town with shopping, dining and family-oriented communities. It has become an integral part of the great Washington DC metro area. The Beacon Hill community is an 1,100 acre reserve of stylish homes with magnificent mountain views of the Appalachia foothills. One of the oldest and most historic structures in Aldie is the grist mill. It was completed in 1809. The mill is a large 4 story brick structure with tandem metal waterwheels. Aldie Mill developed into the largest factory of its type in Loudoun County. The mill provided superfine flour for commercial export and operated until 1971. It is one of the best preserved mills in the Commonwealth and was acquired by NOVA Parks in 2006 from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. Aldie hosts two major festivals a year. The Treasures On the Turnpike festival occurs in May and highlights vintage and antique vendors. There are antiques, vintage collectibles, crafts and jewelry, a flea market and rummage sale. There are historic lectures and tours operating at the Mill. Live bands also often play at this festival. The other large festival is the Aldie Harvest Festival in October. The festival features arts and crafts, food, antiques, children’s activities, tours of historic Aldie Mill, live music and more.

Gilbert’s Corner Regional Park offers 156 acres of hiking trails and beautiful views of the Bull Run Mountains. The Old Caroline Road, which runs through the park, used to be an active north/south route used in the 18th and 19th century. The area was significant during the Civil War and saw a lot of action between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Aldie took place around the area on June 17, 1863.

In 1962, an area called Sterling Park was a collection of large farms. Fred Franklin Tavenner, a distant relative of Benjamin Franklin’s, was an important operator and landowner in the area. In 1959, the development of the Dulles International Airport and the affiliated water and sewer lines to it began to change the area. Land prices rose and there was competition in buying.
