Communities in Herndon, VA

 

Located in Fairfax County in Virginia, Herndon is the largest (population-wise) of the three incorporated towns in the county. In the past, Herndon was a hub of dairy farming and a popular local vacation spot. It was conveniently located along the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad. The railroad was later converted into a hike-and-bike trail and the train station became a museum and visitors center for the town’s history. The Herndon Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in the early 1970’s, Hiddenbrook is a development with 393 traditional and contemporary-style homes. There is a clubhouse, community pool and tennis courts. Close by to schools, it is the perfect community for growing families. Nearby shopping is available in Old Town Herndon, Elden Street and Sterling Town Center. Forbes Magazine ranked the city of Fairfax as 3rd in their “Top 25 Places to Live Well” list in May 2009. They were impressed by the strong educational system, high median salary, and the rate of sole proprietors per capita which makes it part of the top 1 percent nationwide. George Mason University, the largest university in Virginia, is located in southern Fairfax and is notable for its programs in economics, law, creative writing, computer science and business.

The City of Fairfax holds many annual events for residents and those who live in nearby communities to enjoy. The annual Chocolate Lover’s Festival is held every February, featuring craft shows, family-friendly activities, vendors selling various chocolate products, and chocolate sculpture contests. Fairfax Civil War Day occurs in the Spring every year, and a Civil War reenactment camp is set up at Blenheim Estate, featuring education about the Civil War, military muster, drill, and a firing demonstration.

In April, there is the Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts Festival which coordinates with George Mason University, Northern Virginia Community College and City of Fairfax schools. The festival runs for three weeks and features music, dance, theater, art and choral performances. These events take place throughout the city and at the schools. Many residents commute by car and will find that many major roads pass through the city. State Route 123, SR 236, and SR 237 pass through Fairfax. SR 236 is called Main Street and becomes Little River Turnpike outside of the city limits. In the northeast corner of the city, US Route 50 intersects with US Route 29. Interstate 66 is the main highway that serves the area and provides access to the other major cities in the DC Metropolitan area.

Located in Fairfax County and approximately 20 miles west of Washington DC, the town of Centreville saw much population growth in the 1990s and 2000s. There are many shopping centers that were built around the town center. The three major road that run through the area are US Route 29, VA Route 28 and SR 620 (Braddock Road). Interstate 66 is the route towards Washington DC.

Fairfax County Public Schools serves Centreville. Liberty Middle School and Ormond Stone Middle School are the two middle schools in the area, with some students going to Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly. Centreville High School is in Clifton but serves much of Centreville. Chantilly High School and Westfield High School also serve the area but are in Chantilly.

What recreational activities does Centreville offer for residents in the area? Discover Cox Farms, a family-owned farm that hosts seasonal events. Fall Festival tickets can be purchased from September through October and admission includes access to a variety of fun fall activities – hay rides, fun slides, feeding and petting farm animals, apple cider and donuts, popcorn, corn mazes, pumpkin picking and more! Bull Run’s Atlantis Water Park opens Memorial Day weekend and offers swimming and splashing entertainment for the whole family to cool down during the humid Mid-Atlantic summers. The Bull Run Festival of Lights is hosted every year after Thanksgiving, with a 2.5 mile trail of beautifully decorated holiday-themed light displays.
